North Korea Better Off with Nuclear Reactors

Yongbyon_cooling_tower An Editorial -- Bitterness, disagreement, and animosity characterize U.S.-North Korea relations, but the long decades of name calling and saber rattling could be nearing an end.

President George W. Bush formally removed North Korea from America's list of regimes that sponsor terrorism, and declared the former rogue state to be "kind of annoying, but no longer eligible for the Axis of Evil."

Recent diplomatic breakthroughs aimed at reducing nuclear proliferation appear, on the surface at least, to benefit the world's peace and security. Are these changes truly positive?

Provision of financial incentives to Pyongyang in exchange for the demolition of its cooling tower at Yongbyon will spawn unexpected new threats that could destabilize already shaky international markets.

What We Know So Far: Obama Blacker, Hillary Girlier

Panama_canal2 An Editorial -- The 2008 Democratic presidential primary season has been remarkable for its intensity and competitiveness. Fundraising ability, charisma, and competition for a fickle media's attention are the talking points of a campaign that is energizing the party's faithful while confounding its Republican adversaries.

Dark horse outsiders like Dennis Kucinich, Christopher Dodd, Joe Biden, and Bill Richardson have already departed the scene without leaving much of an impression. Although once considered a genuine contender for the nomination, strikingly handsome John Edwards has also decided to drop out. What remains is a fascinating slugfest between two heavyweight contenders: Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

Which one will best lead this nation into the dark abyss of liberalism? Who is most prepared to hand the keys of U.S. sovereignty over to the violent forces that oppose our way of life? What are the fundamental differences between the two adversaries, and why should we care?

John Edwards: Voters Forgot I'm A Beautiful Male Caucasian

John_edwards An Editorial -- Even after weeks of dismal election results, former U.S. Senator John Edwards continued to declare his candidacy "viable" and "credible" and insisted it "doesn't suck as bad as it looks like it does".

Mr. Edwards' plucky words were at odds with reality, however, and his distant third-place finish in Tuesday's Florida Democratic primary appears to have dealt the fatal blow to a troubled campaign. Although no actual delegates were at stake in what was essentially a "beauty contest", the electorate's mandate underscored the futility of the South Carolina native's efforts.

In a speech on Wednesday, John Edwards announced he would end his quest for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

"I've never lost a beauty contest in my life," said the dreamy hunk of eye-candy, "but in the interest of supporting my party I'm not going to muddy this election by demanding a recount of voters' eye examination scores."

There's A Message For Me

Rotary_phone An Editorial -- Telephone answering machines are going the way of record turntables and pagers. There will be collectors and cults but tape and even digital message recorders are becoming old news. We can anticipate Internet forum flame wars about how analog tape answering machines have a "warmer" sound than the more accurate but "sterile sounding" digital versions.

I remember when voicemail first became available on my telephone. It was awkward and hard to use; keep in mind that remote access was not always possible—rotary-dial phones were not yet extinct. Call waiting was very exciting too. With it came the power to remind people that your conversation with them may not be the most important one for you.

Oh, Canada: Why The U.S. Must Strike First

Canadian_flag_2 An Editorial -- Since its founding over two hundred years ago, the United States has faced many challenges. During periods when our very existence as a nation is under threat, like Pearl Harbor, or times of trial, like O.J. Simpson's, we Americans have come together and joined in a common cause. The day to set aside our partisan politics, our petty bickering, our indifference and apathy, is today. A present danger lurks like a ravenous timber wolf, and it is pacing the border of our northern frontier, drooling and growling. In its greedy attempts to claim new territory, it urinates on our good American trees. That danger is Canada.

2007: The Year In Review

Jetpack Special Report -- In a year that was always certain to follow 2006, 2007 proved itself to be composed of the entire 365 days predicted by a majority of experts. Consistent with previous years, the days were grouped into fifty-two weeks of approximately seven days each. Monday continued to be the worst day of the week. Tuesday's just as bad.

2007 was a year filled with war, civil unrest, corrosive political debate, high-profile criminal trials, governmental mismanagement and corruption, ever-expanding threats to personal freedoms, and sputtering economic performance. Outside the United States, things were even worse.

Fashion Models Same As Other People, Only Thinner

Catwalk An Editorial -- Their remote, unreal beauty universally inspires average people. Their hobbies are much the same as those of common folk: obsessive exercise, liposuction, fasting, and vomiting. They are neither glamorous robots nor cleverly disguised space aliens, but actual human beings—although composed of much less flesh and blood than non-modeling life forms. They are female fashion models.
